Mary Ann Wilson's "The Tacky South" Class Registration

Mary Ann Wilson's "The Tacky South" Class Registration
Title: THE TACKY SOUTH
Dates: Sundays Feb. 16, 23, & March 2.
Time: 3-5pm
Location: The Grand Salon at Pretty Good Books
Text: Poachers by Tom Franklin (Available NOW at Pretty Good Books) $16
The word "tacky" has been studied and researched by scholars and has resulted in a recent book of essays from LSU Press with the title THE TACKY SOUTH.
We will talk about the word's origins in white Anglo-Saxon culture, its various meanings, and how it has come to be a part of how the many Souths define themselves. Or at least how others define the many Souths. We will discuss Dolly/Dollywood, Elvis and Graceland, Beverly Hillbillies, Swamp People, red velvet cake, Cracker Barrel, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," etc.
We will also read some wonderful short stories by Alabama writer Tom Franklin, from his first book POACHERS.
As always I will supplement with video clips, interviews with writers, and will want to hear from you about your definition (s) of and experiences with the word.
Come spend these Sundays during this dead time of winter with us at PRETTY GOOD BOOKS.
FEE: $30 for 3 classes. $20 for 2. Or $10 for one class.
